Kolkata, the city of joy is the Capital city of the Indian State of West Bengal. Kolkata is approximately 80 kilometre west of the border with Bangladesh located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. After Mumbai, Kolkata is the second largest city in India. It's original name was Kalikata, later it was officially changed to Kolkata as of 2001.

Kolkata is the dominant urban centre of eastern India, a city of commerce, transport and manufacture. The dominant language of Kolkata is Bengali, but other languages like Urdu, Oriya, Tamil, Punjabi are also spoken. More than four-fifths of the population is Hindu living in Kolkata. 

1. Victoria Memorial

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building located in the heart of Kolkata, in West Bengal. Another relic of the British Raj in India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. This white marbled opulent structure is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, then Empress of India to celebrate her 25 years of rule over India. At night Victoria Memorial is breathtaking and marvellous especially when it is illuminated. The sound and light shows are an added delight and a must watch that take place in the evening. For the people who wish to relive the Victorian era in this modern world, this place is the best to visit. 

The weather is normally 26°C and the timings to visit Victoria Memorial is from 5:30 AM to 6:15 PM for Garden and 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day except Monday and national holidays for Gallery. The entry fee for Garden is INR 10 and for Museum is  Indians INR 20, Foreigners INR 200 and for school children upto age 12 in uniform is free.

2. Howrah Bridge

An iconic landmark of Kolkata, Howrah Bridge is a balanced cantilever bridge constructed over the Hooghly River. The Howrah Bridge is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal and is one of four on the Hooghly River. Howrah was the 3rd- longest cantilever bridge in the world after getting commissioned in 1943. The bridge serves as the gateway connecting it to the Howrah Station to Kolkata. As it connects Howrah and Kolkata, it is also known as Rabindra Setu. The fact that makes this bridge more unique is that it was built without a single bolt or nut and is held together by rivets. 

The normal weather of Howrah Bridge is 26°C. The entry fee is not required here. It is built over Hooghly River. The length and the Height of the bridge is 705m and 82m respectively. The width of Howrah Bridge is 71ft along with two footpaths of 4.6m on both side. It is functional since february 3 1943.

3. Indian Museum

The Indian Museum is located in the city of joy Kolkata. It is the ninth largest in India and oldest museum of the world. It has unique collections of antiques, ornaments and armour, fossils, mummies, skeletons and Mughal paintings. In the year 1814 , the foundation of Indian museum was laid down. It also has the finest collection of ancient sculptures, contemporary paintings and sacred relics of Buddha. The Indian Museum, presently has 35 galleries divided into six categories named as Art, Geology, Archaeology, Anthropology, Zoology and Economic Botany. 4. Science City Kolkata

One of its kind in India, The Science City of Kolkata is the largest science centre in the Indian Subcontinent inaugurated on 1st July 1997. It is one of the largest science Museum in the world which provides a fun way of learning science. It is a governmental organization managed by National Council of Science Museum (NCSM), Ministry of Culture. The main motto of the Science City was the popularisation of science over the world. It is located at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J. B. S. Haldane Avenue, Kolkata. The Science City is a perfect blend of education, science and fun. 5. Kalighat Temple

Kalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu Temple located in Kalighat, Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the 51 Shakti Sthals of India dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, one of the most visited temple in India. Kalighat is known for Kalighat Kali which is densely populated neighborhood. It contains many shrines and altars where devotees ask for blessings. The surrounding are of Kalighat temple has many tea stalls and market selling goods. The spot of Kalighat Kali Temple is where the various parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. Kalighat represents the spot where the toes of the right foot of Sati fell. 

The Temple can be reached easily by cab or taxi, located in the South Kolkata reign of Kalighat. The nearest metro stations yo reach there Kalighat and Jatin Das park.

6. Alipore Zoo

The Alipore Zoo, also known as the Zoological Garden of Alipore or the Calcutta Zoo, is the oldest zoological park and a big tourist attraction in Kolkata have been established in India. The Alipore Zoo attracts large number of tourists from all across the nation who visit the zoo to explore the wildlife.
